HOLLSPA specializes in bathrooms
Bathrooms are at the center of my work—from a single problem to planning, designing and constructing an entirely new room.
I also work selectively beyond bathrooms, particularly with architectural finishes and details, kitchens, tile and stone, and other design or construction challenges where my experience can be useful.
Sometimes the challenge is straightforward. Sometimes the real work is understanding what is happening, what has failed, what can be saved, and what needs to change.
I plan and design for the people who will use the room
Designing a bathroom begins with the people who will use it—their routines, their priorities, and how the room we create may make them feel.
From there, I consider the whole room: space planning and accessibility; plumbing and fixtures; lighting and electrical; cabinetry and storage; countertops and tile; glass, mirrors and hardware; heating, ventilation and waterproofing—and the many other decisions that need to work together.
The scope of design extends beyond form and function. I investigate existing conditions and account for budget and long-term value, durability and maintenance, product availability and support, codes and building requirements, and the other realities that shape the right solution.
And because a design ultimately has to be built, I develop it with construction in mind: material properties, fabrication and installation methods, site logistics and available craftsmanship can all affect what I design in the first place.
It takes a village to build a bathroom
Depending on what the project requires, I bring together a general contractor, trades, fabricators and other specialists. Many are people I have worked with for years—some for decades.
The general contractor and trades carry out the day-to-day construction on site, while I coordinate the project around them: finished-material procurement, fabrication, and the handoffs from one part of the work to the next.
I also remain involved wherever my design knowledge or judgment is needed—reviewing the work, answering questions, developing and approving shop drawings, coordinating templates and installations, resolving field conditions, and fine-tuning details as the design becomes a real room.
I care a great deal about how your home is treated during construction. The completed project matters, but so does the experience of getting there. Much of what determines the quality and longevity of that room will also be hidden behind the finishes. I place as much importance on the work you cannot see as on the room itself.
Throughout construction, you have access to many kinds of expertise, but you will always have one person to call: me. I hold the project together.
My recommendations serve your interests
My professional responsibility is to give you the best judgment I can, whether that leads to more construction or less.
If a $10,000 repair responsibly solves the problem, I should be able to recommend it instead of a $50,000 intervention. At other times, I may recommend spending more because the less expensive approach compromises the integrity of the work.
My professional time is compensated separately from the amount spent on construction. The trades and specialists I work with run their own businesses; I don't maintain a large construction workforce that needs projects to keep it occupied.
That gives me considerable freedom to assemble what a project actually needs and to recommend what I believe serves you best.
A relationship that continues
For many clients, one project leads to a relationship that continues for years. They come back for another part of the house, a repair, a question about something we installed, or simply something they don’t know whom to call about. I keep detailed project records so I can often return to what we did years later.
