The wall continues around the bench

The benchtop remains separate from the walls and floor, allowing water, air and light to move around the bench.

Freedom for the architecture 

Walls and floors can continue uninterrupted. Glass, lighting, plumbing and drainage can be designed for the room rather than around the bench. 

The bench asks almost nothing of the architecture around it, leaving the room free to take shape on its own terms. 

Freedom for the benchtop

The HOLLSPA bracket system allows the benchtop to remain independent from the surrounding architecture. 

Without side walls, floor supports or a box determining its form, the benchtop is free to take shape on its own terms. It can be thin or substantial, small or large, straight or curved, in materials and finishes selected as part of the room. 

How it works

The HOLLSPA Floating Shower Bench brings together two elements: the HOLLSPA Bracket System and an independent benchtop.  

The Bracket System consists of concealed framing brackets behind the backerboard and exposed bench brackets that engage them through the wall assembly and support the benchtop. The exposed brackets do not compress the finished wall or restrict movement of the wall assembly. 

The independent benchtop can be supplied by HOLLSPA, or you can design and fabricate your own.

The HOLLSPA Floating Bench began with a question: could a shower bench be strong and permanent without becoming part of the walls or floor? 

The answer developed through drawings, full-scale prototypes, engineering, fabrication and testing. Working with engineers and fabricators, I refined how the structure transfers the load back into the wall while leaving the benchtop visually independent.  

What appears simple in the finished shower is the result of a great deal happening where you don't see it. 

  Design, planning & installation

The HOLLSPA Floating Bench is planned as part of the shower and installed in three steps. Before construction begins, the bench location, dimensions, benchtop and required wall framing should be coordinated with the finished shower.

STEP 1 — Rough-In & Wall Covering

The wall framing is reinforced and the framing brackets are installed before backerboard, waterproofing and tile.

STEP 2 — Bench Bracket Installation

After the wall is tiled and grouted, the exposed bench brackets and trims are installed and connected to the concealed framing brackets.

STEP 3 — Benchtop Installation 

After the brackets have cured, the benchtop is bonded to them and positioned with the required gap from the surrounding walls.

What comes with the bracket system

The HOLLSPA Bracket System is supplied as a complete mounting kit, organized around the same three steps used for installation.

The bracket system includes the concealed framing brackets, exposed bench brackets and trims, along with the hardware, spacers, silicone and installation aids required for the three installation steps. 

The materials needed to install the benchtop—including the structural epoxy, benchtop spacers and epoxy mixing surface—are also included with the Bracket System. This allows you to install either a HOLLSPA benchtop or one you design and provide yourself. 

Materials are organized by step, so only the components needed at each stage of construction need to be taken to the jobsite.
